Harris Periodontics Serving Others
Each year we travel to the Dominican Republic as part of a volunteer team of periodontists, dentists, dental assistants, students, and more. This service project was created 38 years ago by Dr. Frank Serio, a recipient of the American Dental Association Humanitarian award.
Our trip is held every year over the Fourth of July weekend. We travel to five different communities in the province of Ocoa in the Dominican Republic (one each day from Monday through Friday). Dental care includes filling cavities when possible, extracting teeth as necessary, and most impressively, fabrication of dentures and partials for people with missing teeth. The impact is quite significant to these communities and has consistently added up to over $500,000 of care in 5 days.
We typically have about 20 volunteers, including anyone willing to help with the general setup and breakdown.
