Periodontics is the specialization in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease - gum disease - and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.
By choosing a specialist, such as the Drs. Harris, you will benefit from the latest procedures for treating periodontal disease and placing dental implants tailored to your needs. In addition, they can perform cosmetic periodontal procedures to help you achieve the smile you desire.
Periodontal Diseases are inflammatory disorders resulting in ongoing infections of the gums and bone that gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth. Gum Disease causes your tissues to turn red, swell, and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums and bone separate from the teeth causing pockets (spaces) to deepen. Periodontal Disease damages the teeth, gum, and jawbone of more than 80 percent of Americans by age 45 and may have negative effects on your general health.
Dental Implant Therapy is designed to look, feel, and function like your natural dentition. Implants themselves are small titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, dental implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence.
Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery is directed at improving the overall esthetic appearance of your smile. With refined surgical procedures, the Drs. Harris can even out an uneven gumline, or adjust the tooth-to-gum ratio to create a radiant smile. The exposed roots of a toothy smile can be covered with gingival gum grafting. With esthetic crown lengthening, a gummy smile can be altered to expose more tooth. These procedures are a predictable way to cover unsightly, sensitive roots and to prevent future gum recession.
