Diagnosis of Periodontal Disease

The diagnosis of periodontal disease can only be given by a professional. Signs or symptoms you may notice include:

  • Gums that bleed easily, which may occur spontaneously, during brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pus between the teeth and gums
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

Other factors that may be linked to periodontal disease include heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory diseases among others. If you are being treated for or suspect you may have any of these conditions, a thorough dental and periodontal evaluation is advisable.
